Objective and Scope

“knowledge is the result of the synthetic activity of consciousness.”
J. E. Creighton, the Nature of Intellectual Synthesis (1896)

With 2.5 million scientific articles per year, neither information nor access to information is a limiting factor so much as critical analysis of scientific content. The complexity of environmental issues is better asked and answered from a plurality of perspectives. Today, most problems are tackled somehow independently by different scientific disciplines and school of thoughts. The natural, social and human sciences each have their own codified usage of words, specific standards and methodologies to ensure depth and integrity. S.A.P.I.EN.S redefines what a scientific critical stat of the art should be, by providing readers with clear access to recent advances of scientific areas other than their own and by fostering multidisciplinary approaches.

S.A.P.I.EN.S publishes synthetic articles (Surveys, Analyses, Introductions) and evidence-based opinions (Perspectives, Views, Book Reviews). Given the breadth of our readership, particular attention is devoted to present concepts, methods and their limits by featuring:

  • what is known

  • what is unclear/unknown

  • an explanation of the paradigm/methodology used

  • a clear distinction between hypotheses, facts and conclusions.
